The project for May 9th 2010

The European dream

The European dream runs across centuries ! Sometimes it appears... sometimes it disappears ! Since 1950, it has known a new revival as a reaction after a succession of violent conflicts, fierce encounters, which have occured for too many years between nations though they were close to each other culturally and spiritually.

The way of Peace

For 60 years, those nations have chosen to follow a new road, the way of peace and friendship, of agreement and reconciliation, of development and solidarity... Nevertheless, this way remain narrow, steep, treacherous... Perseverance, tenacity, hope, loyalty are then necessary...Everyone must do his little bit, bring his little stone to the gigantic, but yet precarious construction, which goes up under our eyes.

Sharing

There are many areas of the lives of European citizens which are as many ways of sharing together for a further progress and efficiency. But we must remark that the European coordination today is not only economical, juridical, administrative, political, financial... as we see generally. It must also be cultural, artistic, associative, spiritual, religious...

Living together

The various elements of society are all concerned by the implementation of theconditions of ‘LIVING TOGETHER’ which would permit to maintain a lasting peace keeping and to develop a generous solidarity.

Look – interrogation

In 1950, the ‘Monnet-Schuman Plan’ proposes an effective reconciliation between the former enemies, thanks to the setting up of a concrete and precise realization : the European Steel and Coal Community. The 60th anniversary of that proposition gives an opportunity to look back at what has already been done in the edification of that ‘European Community’ and to wonder about its future. For to day generations, reconciliation is a fact which belongs to the past and no longer concerns them. To day, at the time of a faster and faster globalisation which runs permanently along with an increasing individualistic resistance, we must ask ourselves how we are going to LIVE TOGETHER in the durable upholding of this fragile peace which constantly threatens to break.

European manifestations

Together with the religious organisations which support the construction process of a Europe in search of unity and also the different authorities in the network of religious congregations and communities in Europe, the dioceses of Metz and Verdun want to celebrate together the 60th anniversary of the ‘Déclaration Schuman’ (May 9th 1950) by a significnat European manisfestation.

‘LIVING TOGETHER’ is the theme proposed to guide the event which would mark the stage of the first sixty years of the peace process engaged by the Fathers of Europe after he Second World War.
